residential=single_family is a subtag of landuse=residential. It is used to indicate that an area is filled with single family, detached houses. These houses often have their own property and are not connected to other buildings[1].

If the houses are attached to each other, use tags like residential=terrace or residential=duplex.

Single family vs detached

While residential=single_family seems to be much more popular, single family houses are also called detached houses in some countries. The value residential=detached is therefore also sometimes used.
